Looker Studio: what it is and how to start

A free Google tool that turns spreadsheets and other data sources into shareable dashboards and reports, without writing code.

Who it is for

Anyone who currently rebuilds the same summary by hand every week. Especially useful if your data already lives in Google Sheets or Google Analytics, since those connect in a couple of clicks.

What it costs

Free to use, including creating reports, connecting data sources, sharing dashboards with others and embedding them in a website. A separate paid tier, Looker Studio Pro, exists for organisations wanting enterprise support and management features; its current pricing is published by Google Cloud and is not quoted here because it was not verified at the date below.

Quick facts

How to get started with Looker Studio

Should you use this instead of something else?

A spreadsheet chart is fine for a one-off look and painful to refresh and share repeatedly. Paid business intelligence tools such as Tableau or Power BI are more powerful and cost money and time to learn. Looker Studio sits in between and is free, which makes it the sensible default for a small business whose data is already in Google tools. If your data is not in Google's ecosystem, the advantage narrows considerably.
