Music Production & Audio: a complete beginner's guide
How recorded audio actually gets made — capturing it cleanly, mixing it, and publishing it, with free tools for the whole chain.
Audio is the one area where the gap between amateur and professional is most obvious to an ordinary listener, and where almost all of that gap is decided before any software opens. People will watch a slightly blurry video and will not tolerate thirty seconds of hollow, echoing sound. The good news is that the main causes of bad audio are cheap to fix and have nothing to do with your recording software.
The two that matter most are the room and the distance from the microphone. A soft, cluttered room and a microphone close to your mouth will beat an expensive microphone across a bare room every time. Nearly every "my recordings sound amateur" problem is one of those two, and both are free to fix.

How music production & audio works, stage by stage
1. Decide what you are making
Music, podcast, voiceover or sound for video, and roughly how long it will be. These paths share the first three stages and separate afterwards.
What matters: Spoken audio is mostly about clarity and consistency and can be finished quickly. Music has no natural end point and can absorb unlimited time. Knowing which you are doing sets how much finishing effort is reasonable.
Common beginner mistake: Buying equipment before knowing which you are making. Podcasting and music production reward completely different purchases, and the wrong ones are hard to recoup.
2. Fix the room before buying anything
Choosing and treating the space you record in. The echo on a recording comes from the room, not the microphone.
What matters: Soft surfaces absorb reflections. A room with carpet, curtains, a sofa and books sounds dramatically better than a bare one, and recording in a clothes-filled wardrobe is a genuine, widely used trick rather than a joke. This costs nothing and does more than any equipment upgrade.
Common beginner mistake: Buying a better microphone to fix echo. A more sensitive microphone captures the room more accurately, so the recording often gets worse rather than better.
3. Capture it cleanly
Recording the source with good level and no distortion.
What matters: Get close to the microphone — a hand span for speech — because proximity improves the ratio of voice to room more than anything else. Set levels so peaks sit comfortably below maximum, since anything that clips is permanently damaged and cannot be repaired later. Always record a few seconds of silence: noise reduction tools need a sample of the room to work from.
Common beginner mistake: Recording too quiet out of fear of clipping, then amplifying afterwards. Raising a quiet recording raises the hiss with it, and that hiss is what makes audio sound cheap.
4. Edit and arrange
For speech, removing mistakes, long pauses and filler. For music, arranging the parts into a structure.
What matters: Speech editing is mostly deletion, and tightening pauses does more for listenability than any effect. Keep a small amount of natural breathing; removing every pause sounds unsettlingly artificial. Work on a copy, or use software that edits without destroying the original.
Common beginner mistake: Cutting so tightly that the delivery becomes breathless. Listeners need small gaps to process what was said, and audio with none is exhausting.
5. Mix
Balancing the parts against each other: dialogue against music, instruments against vocals.
What matters: Balance first, effects later. The most common fault in amateur work is background music sitting far too loud, because the person mixing already knows what the words are. Check on cheap earbuds and a phone speaker, since that is where most people will actually hear it.
Common beginner mistake: Mixing at high volume. Everything sounds good loud, and the balance decisions you make there fall apart at normal listening levels.
6. Get the loudness right
The final pass so the whole thing sits at a consistent, appropriate volume.
What matters: Consistency matters more than absolute loudness, particularly across episodes. Streaming and podcast platforms normalise volume anyway, so pushing everything as loud as possible achieves nothing except squashing the life out of it.
Common beginner mistake: Applying heavy compression to sound professional. Over-compressed audio is flat and fatiguing, and unlike most mistakes it cannot be undone afterwards.
7. Publish it
Exporting in the right format and getting it onto the platforms people use.
What matters: Keep a full-quality master and export compressed copies from it, never from another compressed file. For podcasts, a host generates the feed that the directories read; for music, a distributor places it on streaming services.
Common beginner mistake: Deleting the project file after exporting. Fixing a single mistake later means redoing everything if the editable version is gone.
Choosing your tools
Which software should I start with?
For podcasts, voiceover and straightforward editing, Audacity does everything needed and is free and open source. For music, you want a digital audio workstation with multi-track recording and virtual instruments; GarageBand is free on Apple devices and several free or cheap options exist elsewhere. Do not spend money until a specific limitation stops you.
Do I need an audio interface?
Only if you are using a microphone with an XLR connector, which needs one to reach your computer. A USB microphone plugs straight in and skips the question entirely, which is why USB is the sensible starting point for spoken audio. Interfaces matter when you need several inputs at once or want to use professional microphones.
Are free plugins good enough?
Yes, comfortably, for years. The free effects bundled with most software cover equalisation, compression, noise reduction and reverb to a standard well beyond what beginners can use properly. Paid plugins mostly buy convenience and character, and none of them fix a badly recorded source.
Can AI write or master music for me?
AI generation produces usable background and filler music quickly, and AI mastering tools are genuinely decent at getting a track to a reasonable loudness. Two cautions. First, check the licence terms before using generated music commercially, since rights vary by service and change. Second, generated music tends toward the average of its training material, which is fine for background and weak as the thing people came for.
How much should I spend to start?
Nothing on software. On hardware, a decent USB microphone and closed-back headphones cover almost everything, and both last years. Spending beyond that before you have finished several projects usually buys capability you cannot yet hear the benefit of.

- Recording and editing: Audacity — Free and open source under the GPL, on Windows, macOS and Linux. Records, edits, and includes noise reduction and equalisation. Covers podcasting and voiceover completely.
- Music production on Apple devices: GarageBand — Free on Mac, iPhone and iPad, with virtual instruments and loops included. A genuinely capable starting point, and projects open in Logic later if you upgrade.
- Sound effects and samples: Freesound — Large free library. Check each file's licence before publishing, since some require credit and terms differ from file to file.
- Recording remote interviews: Any call recorder, plus local backups — Have each participant record themselves locally as well as capturing the call. Call audio is compressed and drops out; local recordings are the ones you will actually use.
- Monitoring what you record: Closed-back headphones — Not free, but the one purchase worth making early. Closed-back stops sound leaking into the microphone, and headphones reveal problems that speakers hide.

What is the best free audio editor?
Audacity for spoken audio and general editing — free, open source, and available on Windows, macOS and Linux. For music, GarageBand is free on Apple hardware and better suited, because music needs multi-track recording and instruments that Audacity is not designed for.
Why does my recording sound amateur?
Almost always room echo or microphone distance. Move closer to the microphone, and record somewhere with soft furnishings. Those two changes cost nothing and fix the large majority of cases. Background hiss from amplifying a too-quiet recording is the next most common cause.
Do I need a soundproof room?
No. Soundproofing stops sound entering or leaving and is expensive; what you actually want is absorption, which stops sound bouncing around inside. Curtains, carpet, soft furniture and a full wardrobe all absorb. A small cluttered room beats a large empty one.
What is the difference between mixing and mastering?
Mixing is balancing the parts against each other so everything sits in the right place. Mastering is the final pass on the finished mix so it holds a consistent, appropriate loudness alongside other material. Mixing is where most of the improvement is available to a beginner.
Should I record video and audio separately?
For anything where quality matters, yes. Camera microphones are usually poor and too far away. Record audio separately, clap once at the start so the spike gives you a visual sync point, and line them up in editing.
